Class review and comments:
I went to the Tango in London class last night, run by Oktango (www.tangoinlondon.net), and had my first introduction to Argentinean Tango. The class was held in the Surya Centre, in Pentonville Road, in a small dance area downstairs. To be honest, I was surprised at how small the venue was, but there were only 15-20 people spread between 2 classes, both running at the same time, so it wasn't too bad. However, we did spend a lot of time bumping into each other!
The class itself was very informal, perhaps a little too much for me, having come from a background of more structured dance classes, but I did learn the basics of moving around the floor in the hour or so that I was there. It did, however, feel a little disorganised at times with no introduction at the start of the class and no explanation of what we were going to learn.
Initially we were taught as a group, going over weight transfer walking forwards and backwards, before splitting into beginner (level1) and more advanced (level 3) groups. From there, we spent some time going over frame, weight transfer and movement, going forwards, backwards, sideways and turning. I have been dancing for about 10 years and found that I could translate what I already knew into the Tango style quite easily, so I felt that I progressed quite quickly and, while I didn't seem to be getting anything obviously wrong, the teacher was quick to suggest the smallest of corrections to help improve my style and technique, which I liked.
Overall, I enjoyed it and will definitely go back, although I may try other classes to see if I can something with a little more structure. It was definitely a good taster for me and I am looking forward to learning Tango!'
