Dancing In Beauty

She dances in beauty, throughout the night
Through breathless songs and whispered sighs;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her embrace and her thighs:
Glowing in that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One step the more, one pivot less,
Had half impair'd the nameless grace
Which ripples throughout her midnight dress,
Such emotions lighten o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dark their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The fluid steps, the lunges low,
Which tell of hours in practice spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A dancer lost in the moment!
